Sir William Johnson came to the New York colonial frontier at the invitation of his uncle Sir Peter Warren, a sea captain who had built an impressive house in New York City and had purchased land called Warrensbush along the Mohawk River, south of the area now named Amsterdam, NY. Sir William was just William Johnson at the time of his arrival in America. His title was not granted until the French and Indian War. William managed Uncle Peter's lands until he purchased his own lands on the same side of the river and moved into his first house, Mount Johnson.

What did Johnson handle abandoned land during the civil war?

During the Civil War, President Andrew Johnson implemented policies regarding abandoned land, particularly in the South. He introduced the concept of "land for loyalty," which allowed Union supporters to claim abandoned properties, promoting loyalty to the Union. Additionally, the Freedmen's Bureau, established in 1865, aimed to manage abandoned lands and redistribute them to formerly enslaved individuals, although these efforts faced significant challenges and resistance. However, Johnson's approach ultimately favored the restoration of land to former Confederate owners, limiting the effectiveness of land redistribution for freed people.
