God, sent the angel Gabriel to go unto Zachariah while he was in the temple and tell him that his wife would have a son. and to call his name John. But since Zachariah's wife was so old he did not believe the lords angel Gabriel, so the angel of the lord said unto him that he would be dumb from when he came out of the temple to the time his son was born.

he baptised mainly in the river jordan

Above answer is irrelevant, but also a fact.

There was no bible verse that stated how John the Baptist baptized Jesus, we can only know that "John baptizedwith water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 1:5).

So there are three conclusions most Christians make:

1. John the Baptist didn't baptize under anythings name (Most feasible)

2. John the Baptist baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit

3. John the Baptist baptized in Jesus' name. (Least feasible)

2 and 3 are debated because Christians that believe in Jesus as the one true savior cannot believe in the holy trinity, and vice versa.
