Santa Anna's troops were captured during the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. This decisive battle in the Texas Revolution saw Texian forces, led by Sam Houston, launch a surprise attack against Santa Anna's Mexican army. The overwhelming defeat resulted in the capture of Santa Anna himself, along with a significant number of his soldiers, effectively securing Texan independence.
303 Texans were executed by the Mexican soldiers under the orders of Santa Anna.

In pursuit of Sam Houston's army, Santa Anna split his army into three columns. He hoped to trap the Texan army, but instead, his main force was drawn into battle at San Jacinto, and defeated in eighteen minutes. Santa Anna himself was captured.
Santa Anna only released a couple of hundred prisoners, because he had executed all of the other prisoners. (prisoners of the Mier expedition)
