As with most armies through out history, the biggest problem was getting there. The Mexican Army had to march from Mexico to Texas.
Santa Anna was the general in command of the Mexican troops attacking the AlamoGeneral Antonio Lopes de Santa Anna and his troops marched north from Mexico to bring Texas back under Mexican control. On March 6, 1836, at the Battle of the Alamo, Santa Anna's forces killed 187-250 Texan defenders and later executed more than 350 Texan prisoners at the Goliad Massacre (March 27, 1836).
In pursuit of Sam Houston's army, Santa Anna split his army into three columns. He hoped to trap the Texan army, but instead, his main force was drawn into battle at San Jacinto, and defeated in eighteen minutes. Santa Anna himself was captured.

Santa Anna only released a couple of hundred prisoners, because he had executed all of the other prisoners. (prisoners of the Mier expedition)
Colonel Stephen W. Kearny captured Santa Fe in August of 1846. Kearny was from New Jersey and joined the army during the War of 1812.
