Need to replace the valve cover gasket.
The timing marks for the cam sprocket on a 98 S10 is on the front. The marks for the crank shaft is on the oil pump gear.
I have an 89 s10 with a 2.8 V6. It gets about 22 city, 25 highway.
You probably have an oil leak somewhere around the top of the engine. Valve cover gasket, leaking head gasket. When the engine warms up, it cooks it off and you smell it. http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=S001&UserAction=viewSimpleDiagInfo&Parameters=info
The needle and seat are leaking in your carb and flooding fuel into the engine block. Carb needs to be cleaned and repaired, pressure tested and then drain out oil and oil filter. refill oil and run 10-15 minutes. change oil again and replace oil filter.

1. Disconnect negative cable at the battery.2. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the oil and remove the lower splash panel.3. Detach the Heated Oxygen (HO2S) sensor connector.4. Remove the nuts and bolts connecting exhaust pipe A to the catalytic converter. Discard the gasket and the lock nuts.5. Remove and discard the nuts attaching exhaust pipe A to the exhaust hanger.6. If applicable, remove the mounting bolts from the center beam. Remove the center beam from the subframe.7. Remove and discard the lock nuts attaching exhaust pipe A to the exhaust manifold, then remove exhaust pipe A from the vehicle. discard the exhaust gaskets.8. Loosen the oil pan bolts in a crisscross pattern. To remove the oil pan, lightly tap the corners of the oil pan with a rubber or plastic faced mallet. Clean off all the old gasket material. To install:9. Apply liquid gasket to the oil pan mating surface where the oil pump and the right side cover meet the engine block.10. Install the oil pan gasket to the oil pan.11. Install the oil pan, then finger tighten the center and end mounting nuts and bolts in the proper sequence.12. Tighten the oil pan mounting nuts and bolts starting from the center bolt next to the oil drain plug (bolt No. 1) and work clockwise, tightening the bolts in three steps. Tighten the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).Excessive tightening can cause distortion of the oil pan gasket and oil leakage.13. Install the oil drain plug with a new gasket, tighten the plug to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).14. Install exhaust pipe A using new gaskets and lock nuts. Tighten the nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Tighten the nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter and the exhaust pipe hanger to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).15. Attach the heated O2S sensor connector.16. Install the lower splash panel, then lower the vehicle.17. Fill the engine with oil.18. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.19. Run the engine and check for leaks.20. Turn off engine and check the oil level. Top off the oil level if necessary.
R-22 is a gas ued in the air conditioning. there is no oil in the R 22 gas. The gas when circulated in the compressor it come in contact with the oil which is present inside the compressor used as a lubricant.
Removing the exhaust from a 2002 Cavalier is not too hard as long as no bolts are rusted. Start by unbolting the exhaust at the engine. Remove all exhaust clamps. Unbolt the pipe joints and pull the sections from under the car.
I have a '98 s10 with the 2.2L 4 cylinder and auto transmission, and I average 20MPG mixed. I have never seen it over 22, and it rarely goes under 19 (this is all with mixed driving).
