Abraham made a covenant with God in which Canaan was promised to the Hebrew people as an everlasting possession. This covenant plays a significant role in the history and identity of the Jewish people.
The idea of having a nationality is relatively new concept in world history. Perhaps the last 500-1000 years. People were recognized by the region from which they came. The Jews were the people who came from an area called Judah. Even members of the Roman Empire (the closest thing to a nation at the time) didn't consider themselves Roman; Romans were the people of Rome. Using the Bible for historical context, the Jewish people began when God told Abraham to move to Canaan. They were a nomadic group in the region with the exception of a few periods of stability. (I.e. the two Temple Periods). Abraham, the Jewish patriarch, came from Mesopotamia, but the idea of a Jewish people began with him moving to Canaan. The Jewish People start with Abraham. What became the Jewish People after arriving in Canaan was Abraham's lineage; the people of Judah.
