Addresses that start with 169.254 are assigned when the computer doesn't find a DHCP server. Probably they are not routed because the network won't be unique - you might have different networks with the same address range. Different subnets have to have different address ranges.

∙ 14y agoBecause it is not an internet address, 169.254.*.* range is reserved for network adapters in case if you do not get successfully ip address from a DHCP server. If you have ip address 169.254.255.254 it means that you are not connected to any network or your network has no DHCP servers, or the server requires special kind of identification (MAC, Key phrase and so on).
