China claims a part of Kashmir(15-20%) called Aksai Chin. This region is mountainous and uninhabited but it is vital for china as it connects its 2 troublesome regions of Xizang(Tibet) and Xinjiang(Uyghur province). The roads from Xinjiang passes thru Aksai Chin to Tibet.
There is no religious or cultural reasons and it is purely strategic as I said the place is completely uninhabited.
