On christopher Columbus's 1st voyage he landed in the Americas which he thought was India
Columbus had heard about India's riches and gold and in search for that he landed in America. After he reached America, he searched for gold which the Native Indian Kings gave him plenty and he carried then to Spain.
He thought he reached India, but he reached the Indies. That's why they're called the Indies, I think.
