The contract for the first ENIAC system was signed on 5th June 1943 and it was constructed by John Mauchley and J. Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering from July, 1943. It was unveiled on February 14, 1946 at Penn, USA.

The Army needed new ways to compute Artillery Firing Tables, that were faster and more reliable than the human computers they already used.

∙ 12y agoTo solve artillery trajectory equations for preparation of firing tables needed for new artillery pieces developed in WW2 and existing artillery pieces being used in new environments that their current firing tables did not cover. It was not completed soon enough to do that job in the war, its first real job was to simulate Edward Teller's Classical Super fusion bomb (demonstrating that design to be unworkable), but for about a decade after the end of the war it was successfully used for its original purpose.
