It may be because in the early days of the automobile there were lots of electric cars. Naturally it would be a motorcar. The term motorcar was a common term for an automobile. But the term is very misleading and modern cars are indeed driven by an engine and not a motor unless they are electric. But the dictionary defines Motor as "A machine or device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, or imparts motion; A motor car, or automobile; to drive around leisurely in a motorised vehicle; describing neurons that create the ability to move." So by definition is correct that Ford is a motor company.
