Sin is rebellion and treason against God. The penalty for sin is death. Since God is a just judge, He must sentence sinners to death. However, God is also a loving God. So, His plan was to send His own Son, Jesus, to receive the death penalty for sin so that anyone who believes in Jesus will not have to pay that penalty themselves. When they believe in Jesus, they are united to Him by faith. Their sin is accounted to Him and His perfect righteousness is accounted to them. That is how a person is made right with God. It is a wonderful exchange! Jesus was sacrificed because it was God's wonderful, loving plan to save His people.
