∙ 12y agoHis wooden torpedo boat was cut in half by as steel Japanese destroyer in WWII. He saved his men, including towing (carrying) a wounded crewman, to safety by reaching a deserted island in the Pacific. Then he managed to send a message via natives (who, according to some sources, may have been cannibals) to allied lines. An Australian (coast watcher) received the message, notified US Naval forces, and JFK and his men were rescued.
During WWII, the invading Japanese Army in those regions hadn't treated the natives particularly well in some cases (the German Army had the same reputation in the European theater), so the natives (at least on this occasion) were more than willing to help out the allies when they needed help.
