In the past Kratos was loosing a war, but he was too proud to die so he called to Ares (The previous God of War) asking him to destroy the opposing army in exchange for Krato's eternal devotion. Ares took this oppritunity without hesitation and accepted. But Ares wanted Kratos to be the perfect soldier for him without weakness which was his wife and child. So Ares brainwashed Kratos into killing his wife and child, and into burning there bodies.

Because Ares tricked him, after kratos kills his wife and child he said that they were supposed to be in Sparta, but Ares brought them to the village Kratos was going to destroy. And through the fire he couldn't identify people, so he just killed everyone in the chapel, and found them dead on the floor by his blades.
