Transformer short circuit tests are used to determine the impedances (positive and zero sequence) of the transformer. A simple explanation: to do this one winding is shorted, and voltage is applied to another winding to circulate the normal full load current of the transformer. The impedance of the transformer is the applied voltage divided by the induced current.

If one winding was not shorted, the voltage divided by induced current would not give the impedance of the transformer - the induced current would be much lower, giving a much higher impedance measurement that would be essentially meaningless.

Analysing a circuit with a shorted component?

Analysing a circuit with a shorted component need specialised electrical test equipment.

Why high voltage is kept open in open circuit and low voltage is shorted in short circuit test?

In Short circuit test High Voltage side is feeded with 2-5% of the High Voltage rating to circulate approximately full load current in low voltage winding by short circuiting it. Low voltage is generally short circuited to facilitate measurements because it is more difficult to measure the quantities at high voltages.

Why short circuit test is done at high voltage side?

1)Short circuit test is performed at rated current. As the rated current on high voltage side is much less than low voltage side, so the rated high voltage side current is easily achieved compared to low voltage side. 2)Also because we cannot short circuit high voltage side, as, if we short circuit high voltage side, voltage of high voltage side essentially falls to zero and since VI=constant, so the high voltage side current will be very high and will burn the winding.

Why do you neglect iron loss in transformer during short circuit test?

in short circuit test we apply rated current with the LV side shorted.so the applied voltage will be very low. iron loss depends on the applied voltage.so it is neglected

Can one intentionally short ct to one side of transformer?

yes........ we can short circuit the other side of the winding wen the primary is excited.... but we shouldn't apply rated voltage to the primary.. this method is used in the short circuit test of the transformer to find the parameters of the transformer.....

Why do you put the meters in the high voltage side in the short circuit test?

in the short circuit test we applied supply voltage on L.V side and short circuit the H.V side and connect the ammeter in H.V circuit to measure the short circuit current. with the help of s.c test we measure the copper losses in the transformers.

What is the purpose of open circuit test and short circuit test of a transformer?

An open-circuit test is done with the transformer running at its rated voltage but with no load. This measures the power lost in the magnetic core. (IR Losses) A short-circuit test is done with the transformer running at its full rated current in all windings but at a low voltage. The secondary is shorted and the primary voltage is adjusted to give the rated current. This measures the power lost in the copper windings. (Copper losses)

What 2 wattmetar indicates for short circuit test?

There are four watt-meters that indicates short circuit test. The four are method, procedure, calculations and fault.

Why open circuit test is performed on low voltage side?

generally open circuit test is performed on the low voltage side.....not on high voltage side.... becuase on low voltage side, we can apply that low voltage very easily ( i.e with a less amount of source is required)... whereas on high voltage side, we need a large power source in order to apply full voltage... in short circuit test, we will test on high voltage side by keeping Low voltage side being short circuit.because high voltage side needs less current source than low voltage side....

What meters are kept on HV side in SC test?

insulation tester (Megger) can used to checked the short circuit on HV side. HI POT tester is also a means to checked the shot circuit in HV cable.
