Malaysia Day is different from National day/Independence Day(31 August 1957). Malaysia Day (16 September 1963) is the formation of Penisular Malaysia(before was name Malaya) and Sabah with Sarawak. Malaysia Day is usually just an acknowledgement of the day not a public holiday. The reason Sabah and Sarawak makes 16 September a holiday because on the same day, it's the Head of State (both Sabah & Sarawak) official Birthday. However, there was a call and occasionally debate on establishing the Malaysia Day as a nationwide celebrated holiday. The topic is fairly political and open for discussion, especially after the 2008 March 8th General Election.

Does Malaysia have holidays?

Loads! They differ between states, but some are national holidays. These include New Year (January 1st), Labour Day (May 1st), Malaya Independence Day (31st August) and Malaysia Day (16th September). Malaysia Day was introduced as a national holiday just a few years ago to commemorate the formation of Malaysia. 31st August 1957 was the Independence Day of Peninsular Malaysia, then called Malaya. On the 16th of September, 1963, Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore formed Malaysia. As we know Singapore seceded from Malaysia under mutual agreement to be its own independent country. (There were some disagreements between leaders so they agreed to disagree). There are many races in Malaysia, the main ones being Malay (majority), Chinese (large minority) and Indian (fairly large minority). Chinese New Year is a two-day public holiday throughout Malaysia, and so is Hari Raya Aidilfitri (a.k.a. Hari Lebaran or Eid al-Fitr), a Muslim celebration. (Note: Most Malays are Muslims and vice versa). Hari Raya Korban (a.k.a. Eid al-Adha, Hari Raya Haji) is a one-day holiday, so is Awal Muharram (New Year according to the Islamic calendar) and Maulidur Rasul (Birthday of the prophet Muhammad). Note that all these celebrations differ in date from year to year as they depend on the Chinese Lunar Calendar and the Islamic Calendar. Deepavali (Indian Festival of Lights) is a public holiday in certain states not including Sarawak (there are relatively few Indians in Sarawak). Other religious festivals are Wesak Day celebrated by Buddhists and Christmas Day by Christians. Thaipusam is a Hindu festival and a public holiday in certain states only. Good Friday is a public holiday in Sabah and Sarawak. The Sarawak population is predominantly Christian. The Agong's birthday is also a public holiday, as is the birthday of the current state leader (Sultan/Raja/Yang di-Pertua Negeri). The birthdays of the state leaders are only holidays in that one particular state. Source: Lived there all my life.
