Marik had a dark side because of all the rage that accumulated in him as a result of his abusive father, and the fact he was born into a guardianship role he hated, never being allowed to explore the outside world.
Secondary to this, the Millenium Rod owned by his father had an evil spirit inside. When Marik was old enough, sacred markings were made on his back. Although the dubbed version skipped the explanation, the markings were actually carved into his skin using a blade that can be protruded from the Rod.
Due to this, the evil spirit of the rod was able to exert some manner of control over Marik, making him kill his father. The loyalty of their faithful servant Odion managed to contain the spirit for a while because of his strong bond with Marik, but when he passed out, the dark side was released because Odion couldn't contain it while he was unconscious.
