Because there are now 2 magnesiums and 2 oxygena after they have reacted
MgO, magnesium oxide, is formed by ionic bonding where magnesium (Mg) donates electrons to oxygen (O), resulting in the formation of ions with opposite charges that are held together by strong electrostatic forces.
Half equations ?? The chemical formula of magnesium oxide is MgO.
This compound is magnesium oxide - MgO.

the Lewis formula for MgO is Mg2+[O]2- Which mean Mg loses 2 electrons and O gains 2 electrons to be stable.
i don't know whether there exists Alo,all i study so far is Al2O3both MgO and Al2O3 are ionic compouds. Al3+ is smaller than Mg2+(due to higher proton charge thus attracts the electrons closer),thus the ionic bonds in Al2O3 is greater thus it is harder.
MgO is an ionic compound.
water [H20]
MgO Magnesium Oxide.

The compound MgO contains one magnesium atom and one oxygen atom. Magnesium is a metal element with a +2 charge, while oxygen is a non-metal element with a -2 charge, resulting in a stable ionic compound with a 1:1 ratio of elements.
The balanced equation for the reaction between MgO and H2O is MgO + H2O -> Mg(OH)2.
