Khatris are punjabi kshatriyas only as per glossary of tribes north western frontier vol2 page no 501.they are not shudra.even shree guru gobind singh sahib ji has clearly mentioned himself as son of kshatriya.As khatri is a regional term for depicting kshatriya varna in west punjab in which many castes are there like sodhi bedi trehan bhalla khanna arora etc.as in khatris they used to wear janeue which was neglected by shree guru nanak dev ji.even bhai gurdas ji has mentioned khatris as kshatriyas.

the indian caste system has 4 levels. The Brahmans (priests), the Kshatriya (warriors and landowners), the Vaishya (merchants and artists), and the Shudra (farmers). The untouchables are a group outside of the caste system, but are still considered part of it. They do all of the unwanted jobs.
