It was said that Prince Sang Nila Utama, also known as Sri Tri Buana wanted to find a place to establish a new city to expand his father's empire --- Srivijayan empire. He was believed to be from Palembang, a place slightly south of Sumatra, Indonesia. He saw Singapore and decided to sail there, curious to find out if the place was suitable for to build a city. On his way to Temasek, the name of Singapore then, there was a great storm. There was nothing they can do and the ship was nearly about to sink! He ordered his men to throw all the heavy items off the boat, but it didn't seem to be of much help. His ship officer, then advised him to throw his heavy crown overboard. Upon doing so, the storm instantly subsided. He landed on Singapore and decided to explore the place. While walking through a forest, he suddenly spotted an animal with a red mane and a white breast. It moved with great speed and disappeared in the jungles. Sang Nila Utama was shocked and impressed by the creature. However, he didn't know what it was. He asked his minister what that was and got a reply that it was a lion. He thought that it was a good omen. He decided to name the city after that magnificent creature, and the name "Lion City" is derived. Sang Nila Utama stayed in Singapore and founded it into a great city. However, it has been discovered that lions did not live in Singapore. What Sang Nila Utama probably saw might be a tiger instead.
