I would start by changing the thermostat. They go out, often, or have a tenacy to stick, and are cheap.

there is a screw on the carb right where the throttle cable hooks to it that you use to adjust the idle.
With a standard transmission about 600 to 650. With an automatic 800 to 850.
That doesn't sound right. Maybe try a different gage.
Standard transmision, 750 rpm. Automatic transmission, 600 rpm in drive.
45 LBS. at 2000 RPMs. At an idle it should have at least 15 LBS. or more.
Actually, it should be don e with a vacuum gauge, to maximum vaccuum. Without one, adjust the idle mixture to max., idle.
i have a Chevy 350 small block with headers. It is terrible on rgas .What can i do to improve fuel efficiency. Also very strong smell of gas at idle and extreme when accelerating.
Stock rebuild- it has been said that 10psi per 1000 rpm. At idle 20-30 is about right once the engine is warmed up. Of course this will also vary with the weight of the oil used-not much but it will
If you are talking about the air idle control valve it is a little square black box with two bolts and a plug on top of your engine block.
cam timing will not change ignition timing i would try 8 or 10 degees advance at idle with the vacuum advance disconnected.
Idle is set by the computer.
