The Russians had suffered immense losses and hardships - military and civilian - as a result of the Germans' invasion of Russia. German soldiers and SS groups had been responsible for uncountable cruelties towards Russian civilians and generally considered them as a sort of sub-human species. The total of Russian soldiers and civilians killed exceeds 25 million, the heaviest toll by far of all the parties involved in WW II.

When the Russians finally beat back the Germans and entered German soil, they felt justified in thinking it was now pay-back time. Although it must be admitted that a great number of German civilians suffered death and dishonor at the Russian soldiers' hands (few German women in the war areas escaped being raped) the Russians' cruelties towards civilians were usually individual soldiers' acts and nowhere near as systematic and large-scale as were the Germans' activities on Russian soil.
