Some SKS rifles were brought back... most of them were manufactured in East Germany or China, as the Vietnamese made SKS rifles were and are extremely rare. They were either captured or sold/traded for favours to other soldiers in-country.

A lot of soldiers use AR15s these days. Some still use the M16. This is a very generalized answer,but I hope it is useful.
The blade on the rifle used by the Union Army during the Civil War is called a "bayonet." Specifically, many Union soldiers used the Springfield Model 1861 rifle, which could be fitted with a bayonet. This blade was primarily used for close combat situations when ammunition was scarce or in hand-to-hand fighting.
In 10 rifles were sent to RVN for testing under combat conditions. In 1962 another 1,000 were sent over for further testing. In 1965 the US Army's 1st Air Cavalry Division was issued M16s for the Ia Drang battle (film: We Were Soldiers...).
In Vietnam, for the first time in US history each and every US fighting man possessed a fully automatic rifle. During WWII, each and every US fighting man possessed a semi-automatic rifle (the M1 Garand).

The M14 and M16 were both new rifles which debuted while the US was involved in Vietnam to some extent. The M14 is the battle rifle - the M16 is an assault rifle.

The US M16 (AR15) was considered a "jungle rifle" by the US Army in the 1960s. The "Jungle Rifle" was only issued to US troops in jungle terrain (Central America, South Vietnam, South America, etc.). The official US Rifle during this period was the M14 rifle which was issued to all other US Soldiers & Marines everywhere else in the world including the US.
