The horse may be hurt, you may begetting in their way, they might for some reason not know how to jump, or they may be just plain lazy.

Have a vet thoroughly check her- her reflexes, whether she is 100% sound, whether she is even strong enough to jump, etc.

If you rule out a physical problem, have an instructor or educated friend.parent judge your equitation. You may be unbalancing your horse, or not giving enough reins, or something that is preventing her from jumping her best.

If it isn't you, then it is a matter of experimenting to see what your horse's problem is. You may need to go back to pole work.

I personally would try to raise the jump a bit. My horse used to just trot over the fence. I had to raise it so she would actually jump. However, if your horse gets worse, then lower the fence, because that means he was not ready for a higher fence, and that a higher jump wil not solve the problem, but create a bigger one.

Another thing may be that your horse just doesn't like jumping. I have heard of horses that didn't like the job they had, and they were just never good at it.

How can you get your horse to go over the jump with out him knocking the pole on top?

Horses usually knock the pole down over a jump because they are being lazy or didn't get a good start off the ground. Make sure your horse has enough speed, so that when they jump, they'll lift their front legs higher. You can also practice jumping "X" jumps. It will help teach your horse to pick their legs up.

How can you tell if your horse is good for jumping?

Well there are several ways you can tell if your horse is a good jumper. You can have someone take photos and/or videos of you jumping the horse and look at them to see his form. You can also free jump the horse by building a 'chute' out of jumps down one side of your arena and placing a jump inside of the chute for the horse to jump over. You can see the horses form clearly and watch him. A good jumper, will snap it's front legs up and tuck it's hind legs neatly. There should also be a bascule or arch to it's jump as it rounds it's body in the air.

What do they call it when horses jump on their hind legs?
