In England and some other parts of Europe, on New Year's Eve or/and New Year's Day,on the stroke of midnight, people open the back door (to let the old year out) and ask the first dark haired man to be seen to come through the front door carrying salt, coal and bread. This means that the following year everyone in the house will have enough to eat (bread), enough money (salt) and be warm enough (coal).

It depends upon the situation. For there are two known equivalents in ancient, classical Latin for the English word 'coal'. A piece of coal is a piece of glowing carbon, or of charred wood. The Latin word pruna refers to the live coal, and the word carbo to burning or burned wood.
