The sharp point tends to work as a wedge and move the fibers off to the side. A blunt nail has to cut the fibers in order to go into the wood. This is because of pressure.

Is Buoyancy an upward force exerted by a fluid on a body placed in the fluid?

False. It is an upward force, that (partly) counteracts the downward force of gravity for objects within a liquid. It is related to the resistance (to displacement) by the liquid molecules.

What do solids look like in a microscope?

solid objects like in biopsy are sliced thinly by the use of microtome, dyed and placed on glass slides. Then you can view individual cell.

How often should I change the water in my Dehumidifier?

What happens if an egg is soaked in distilled water?

An egg placed in distilled water will expand more than an egg placed in the salt solution because thee water concentration of the water in the beaker is greater the the water concentration of the egg.

Does water boil faster in a big or small pot?

The answer depends on the heat source. If none of the heat is wasted then it takes exactly the same length of time. For the pot to be larger one would assume that the base takes up a greater area than a small pot. The small pot on a large gas burner would waste energy because heat would rise up the sides of the pot and be wasted whereas the larger pot would absorb more of the heat. Using an inductive hob the time taken to heat up a given amount of water in small and large pots would be relatively equal.

What are examples of normal force?

Examples of normal force include the force exerted by a surface to support an object placed on it, such as the force exerted by the ground on a person standing, or the force exerted by a bookshelf on a book placed on it.

What causes something to sink?

An object sinks when its density is greater than the density of the fluid it is placed in. This means that the weight of the object is greater than the buoyant force exerted by the fluid, causing it to sink.

Why are wooden sleepers are placed below the rails?

to reduce the pressure exerted by the train

What makes a body float?

A body floats when the buoyant force acting on it (upward force exerted by a fluid) is greater than the force of gravity acting on it. This typically occurs when the body is less dense than the fluid it is placed in.

Which of the objects below will have the largest buoyant force exerted on it when placed in the ocean?

A large cruise ship.

Why broad wooden sleepers are placed below the rail line?

to reduce the pressure exerted by the train

When will an object float on a fluid?

An object will float on a fluid when the density of the object is less than the density of the fluid it is placed in. This allows the buoyant force exerted by the fluid on the object to be greater than the force of gravity acting on the object, causing it to float.

Where is a hammer placed on a work bench and why?

Which of these objects will not have enough buoyant force exerted on it to keep it from sinking when placed in Erik's bathtub full of water?

A glass marble

When a body is placed on a surface it exert a force but the body does not move or fall why?

Because an equal and opposite force is being exerted on it.
