Redundancy allows recovery from errors. Networks, like all hardware, can have hardware failures. Computer networks sometime have many components and hardware failures can include something as simple as switching off the power or as annoying as a fishing boat dragging up and breaking an ocean cable.
However, networks also have a lot of soft errors. The most common kind are from congestion, where too much data tries to go on one route. In order to cope with this the switches generally just discard the overload. It is up to the senders and receivers to realize there are errors, and retry later or with some other route. Either way, this works better if we have some redundancy, something extra, built into the network.
Whether due to hardware or due to congestion, networks always have significant levels of error, and so we have learned to use redundancy to allow us to recover from errors. Modern computers are increasingly using systems of redundancy to allow imperfect devices to cooperate to provide a nearly perfect service.
Star and Bus
If you look at redundant networks in nature, like the network of the veins within a leaf you may realize that redundancy creates resilience. Often leaves are subjected to parasites or physical damage. If a vital vein is struck in a network without redundancy it would mean all tissues or nodes which it previously fed into would be effectively annihilated from the network (death). A redundant network overcomes this problem by spreading out the risk. From a Computational standpoint this would be the same problem. Often critical layers of a network if left without connectivity would create critical failures for parts of the network which may be dependent on its activity. Such is the nature of hierarchy.
If money are involved you better have a reliable network. For accounting I would recommend hybrid type of network. The best combination is mesh + star. It will provide you redundancy as well as it will not be as expensive and complicated as pure mesh.
redundancy in a sentence would be unnecessary words to explain a given point

If they were opposite then they would be an oxymoron but, they are the same so, I would say a redundancy.
