The iron core of a transformer holds a magnetic field when energized by the primary windings that conduct current.

It is the building up and collapse of the magnetic field that induces current in the secondary windings.

Direct current has no build up or decay of magnetic field (except when turned on and shut off) so no current is induced in the secondary windings.

Which type of current does a transformer work with?

AC (alternating current)

Does led lighting require a transformer per light or one per circuit?

One transformer should feed several led's in parallel, but you have to work out how much current each one will take, total it up, and then get a transformer with the correct output voltage and that can supply the total current. Don't exceed the transformer max current or it may fail through overheating

Why should a transformer not be used on direct current?

Think of a transformer as a foot pump. Putting pressure on it will cause it to pump air but you need to release the pressure to do it again. The transformer does the same for electricity, if DC is applied to it it will create one pulse of current from the output but that is all. You need the continues rise and fall of AC to work the pump.

What made Nikola Tesla want to invent?

Most historians think that he got the inventing from his mother, Duka, because she would invent tools. He was a celibate and never married. As a matter of face, Tesla moved to New York because he could not develop his ideas. He was a Serbian American inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, physicist, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current(AC) electricity supply system. Tesla gained experience in telephony and electrical engineering before emigrating to the United States in 1884 to work for Thomas Edison in New York City. He soon struck out on his own with financial backers, setting up laboratories and companies to develop a range of electrical devices. His patented AC induction motor and transformer were licensed by George Westinghouse, who also hired Tesla for a short time as a consultant. His work in the formative years of electric power development was involved in a corporate alternating current/direct current "War of Currents" as well as various patent battles.

How can you make a 240 volt 60 cycle Clothes dryer work on a 220 50 cycle system?

You need to purchase a transformer.

Is transformer work without freqency?

No. A transformer has to have AC, alternating current, to work. And since it's alternating, it'll have a frequency.

Can a step down transformer increase current in a DC circuit?

Transformers only work with alternating currents. So the answer is Yes, BUT it would have to be a DC Pulsing circuit. using flip flop circuit or a 555 circuit or chop circuit.

Why doesn't transformer work on a DC supply?

to have transformer action there should be an alternating magnetic flux.but dc supply cannot produce alternating flux.

Which type of current does a transformer work with?

AC (alternating current)

Is power transformer is constant current device?

No, it has to be an alternating current in order to work

What type of current must be used with a transformer?

DC current cannot be used in a transformer only AC will work. A transformer needs the continual build and collapse of the magnetic field to keep the iron core from reaching saturation. Only alternating current will transfer power through a transformer.

How does a welding transformer work?

A welding transformer uses the alternating current supplied to the welding shop at a high voltage to produce the low voltage welding power

Why transformer not produce DC current?

because transformer in made inductorAlternative AnswerTransformers are AC machines, and do not work with DC. This is because they require an alternating current to set up an alternating magnetic flux which then induces an alternating voltage into its secondary. Remember, there has to be a changing magnetic flux and a conductor for an emf. to be induced into that conductor.

Why do transformers work only work on an AC supply?

Transformers only work on ac supply because it principle is mutual induction. DC supply has constant magnitude whereas AC has alternating magnitude. so we can step up or step down current/voltage in transformer in ac only.

Does electrical transformer use a DC or AC source?

A transformer is a device to convert high voltage AC to low voltage AC & vice-versa. It works on the principle of induction. Since induction occurs only in an AC supply, a transformer cannot work on DC.. So, it is not possible to convert DC supply to AC using transformer. You would need an inverter to convert DC to AC.

Why isn't the supply voltage DC instead of AC for a transformer?

A transformer relies on an alternating current in order to work. An electrical transformer converts electromotive force to magnetomotive back to electromotive. In order for an electromotive force to be induced by a magnetic field, the field must be moving.

In D.C supply the transformer is not connected why?

In a DC power supply a transformer is connected. The only time there would be no transformer used would be if the DC voltage wanted was 120 VDC. The transformer in the power supply is connected to 120 VAC on the primary side and the secondary side of the transformer is connected to either a half wave or a full wave diode bridge. The voltage out of the diode bridge will be the same output voltage potential as the transformer's secondary voltage but it will be a DC (Direct Current) potential.Reading the question in another way, transformers are not connected in a DC circuit. The reason being is that the transformer operates on a collapsing magnetic field. This field induces a voltage into the secondary side of the transformer. Since the DC circuit does not operate on the principle of a collapsing field except when the circuit is opened, the transformer would not operate as a transformer should..
