When in open ocean a tsunamis are usually only a few feet high and often hundreds of miles long. Even with their high speed they often take several minutes to pass.
When they enter shallow water they slow down and increase in height.
Innthenocean, Tsunamis are only a couple of feet high
Tsunamis can travel over 600 mph in the open ocean. It can only take a few hours for a tsunami to travel across an entire ocean. A regular wave travels at 90 km/hr. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/tsunami/
Because the tsunami spreed all across the Indian Ocean ,not only in Indonesia.
The tsunami wave moves through the ocean at about 400 mph. When it hits the shore it rises up and floods/smashes.
One tsunami would be the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
In the deep ocean a tsunami wave travels at well over 800 kilometres per hour (500 mph). As the tsunami approaches the coast and the waters become shallow its velocity slows to below 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph) and it becomes taller.
Tsumanis won't affect whales as they travel through the ocean because it would just be another wave out at sea. If the whales were close to shore they could be swept inland, though.

Not in the deep open ocean. Out there a tsunami will pass unnoticed under boats.
It travels through the river until it reaches the ocean.
