Most races (or regattas as they're formally called) take place over 2km. The fastest time a boat has travelled 2km is around the 5:10 mark. This means your average rower in an eight is doing well to go below 6 minutes. Therefore rowers are pushing themselves at sprint pace for a whole 6 minutes, normally more, especially in the smaller boats. Therefore rowers need to be agile in their style and make sure they are being as effective with their technique as possible.
