First off diesel fuel has a higher energy density than gasoline. Unlike a gasoline engine that uses spark plugs to ignite the fuel the diesel has no spark plugs and the fuel is ignited by heat through high compression. This is the reason a diesel is more powerful than a gas engine. High compression, and high temperature at combustion equals more power or torque as it is called. Diesels engines develop more torque or pulling power than gas engines but gas engines develop more horsepower. So simply put, if you want pulling power you need a diesel.

Do ships use diesel?

Yes, many ships use diesel as a fuel source, particularly those with diesel engines. These engines are commonly found in smaller vessels, such as ferries and cargo ships. Larger vessels, like container ships and tankers, often use heavy fuel oil, which is a more economical option for long-distance travel, but some modern ships are increasingly adopting cleaner alternatives, including liquefied natural gas (LNG).
