Special care must be taken to properly maintain aluminum connections. Generally, aluminum connections are retightened at least once a year. Because this is not practical in homes, aluminum is no longer allowed for home wiring. It is largely true that most homes built with aluminum no longer exist . . . because they burned down!

the materials are different, and they can corrode if mixed in with copper or copper alloy materials used in home and industrial power wiring. The sockets and plugs are specific for use with aluminum OR copper, but not both. The resistence of the alloy and copper are different, and can make the GFI sockets fail or work improperly. When in doubt, check with a licensed electrician.

Aluminum is a very good conductor of electricity. It has been used for electrical wiring in the past as an alternative to copper. There are several reasons why it is rarely used for wiring, the main one being the risk of heating or fire if it is not installed correctly.

It serves many purposes within the electrical and electronics industry.
