The key to utility with aluminum is maintaining the piece. Keeping the thing clean might involve a quick rinse right after use. It's a great idea if one minimizes the amount of water run down the drain. It only takes a couple of seconds. (We're conserving water in the kitchen and elsewhere, right?) Without running down the chemistry involved, aluminum does or doesn't rust in the conventional sense. It will oxidize under certain conditions, but it is fairly easy to clean. Heavily oxidized aluminum may present a dull finish or even a whitish deposit. The reason aluminum resists corrosion is because when aluminum is exposed to air (oxygen), a thin layer of oxide forms and this stops any further corrosion. Every time we scour our pan, we remove some of this layer. (But don't panic - the layer is only a few atoms thick.) Need to clean aluminum? There is nothing like making tomato (spaghetti) sauce and simmering it for a while in an uncoated aluminum pot to clean the inside. The results are spectacular. Aluminum can be cleaned with a wet paper towel and scouring powder, a green scrubbie with or without scouring powder and with steel wool. Anyone who is fastidious can bring up a nice shine on aluminum with fine steel wool and a bit of elbow grease. And the whole thing can be done "dry" instead of with water and/or scouring powder. (You can see your results immediately.) But work over newspaper or the like so mess is minimized. Some aluminum things can present a challenge, like a garlic press. But they can be cleaned - and should be. Bon appétit!
Exposure to air and moisture can cause aluminum to oxidize, forming a dull layer on the surface of the pan over time. This oxidation process is normal and can be removed by cleaning the pan with a mixture of vinegar and water or a specialized aluminum cleaner.

The OEM oil pan for the 1998 Dodge Neon is aluminum. However previous years ('95 and '96) used steel. Both versions use the same gasket (and, hence, bolt pattern).While the two pans have geometrical differences, one being the aluminum version is more shallow, they hold an equivalent volume of oil. Because the aluminum pan is shallower, the oil pick up tube must be changed when converting from a steel to an aluminum plan in order to accommodate the shallower aluminum pan. The two pan materials also use different size threads for the oil drain plug so the drain plug must be matched when changing between pan materials.The aluminum pan is made of cast aluminum and tends to crack whereas the steel pan tends to dent, when impacted.
