The million dollar question! No one know exactly why an outbreak happens but there are several factors that can cause them...
1. A weakened immune system is often the reason
2. Stress is the leading cause. Both physical and mental stress can lead to a herpes outbreak.
3. Diet. Certain foods such as almonds and chocolate when eaten in large quantities can trigger an outbreak.
4. Over exposure to UV-Rays
There are other things that can trigger outbreaks but the reasons listed above are the most common.
Everybody is different and the virus affects everyone differently. Just how much stress can cause an outbreak depends on the person. The same is true for diet, immune system and UV-Rays.
