The Roman mile (Latin, mille passuum) was a unit of distance equal to 1,000 paces (roughly 1479 metres). This is not the same as the modern statute mile (1609 metres) nor a US survey mile (1609.344 metres).
The Romans were first to use a long unit of distance. The need for such a unit is obvious; knowing the distance between any two points and the speed of the traveller determines how long it will take to get from one point to the other. "Milestones" indicated the remaining distance to the next town or village.
