Mummification is a somewhat weird practice which seems to result from a refusal to accept the reality of death. If a dead body is mummified, it will not decay. People were trying to protect their bodies even after their death, despite the fact that once you are dead, nothing more can happen to you. Damaging a dead body does not make it any deader.
