The Arctic fox is not listed as "Endangered" according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature or the IUCN Red List. But, they are listed as "Least Concern" with a population trend posted as "stable". Because people hunt them for their fur and for sport. In 1997, there was a decline in the Arctic wolf population and its prey, muskoxen and Arctic hares. This was due to harmful weather conditions during the summers for four years. The recovery of the Arctic wolf population came after when summer weather conditions returned to normal.
