I don't know if they are scared or not, but it is impossible to "show" a pure spirit in a visual medium like a cartoon or a film. Pure spirits have no dimension (height, depth, width), and thus don't really show up.

Are cartoons only for entertainment?

No, of course not. Anyone showing Urotsukidoji to a child, for example, could probably be arrested in many countries. While most animated films seem targeted to children, there are many animated films that are actually intended specifically for adult audiences. There are existing animated films that are pornographic or extremely violent that are most definitely not intended for children. Also, many animated films, while ostensibly intended for children, are made by adults who have fun slipping in adult subtexts, thus rendering the film accessible at different levels to both children and adults. Many Bugs Bunny cartoons are prominent examples of this.
