In the 18th century, the Dalmatian was called a "coach dog" as it bonded well with horses and helped protect them, particularly against theft. Later when fire departments formed, the Dalmatian was often aboard the first horse-drawn equipment because it guarded the horses at the fire house. Today, we often see these spotted canines around because of tradition and the history of the fire service. Links can be found below that relate this information.

Dalmatians were commonly used in the fire service to serve two purposes:

  1. Back when horse-drawn steamer carts were used, the dalmatians would not only keep the horse company but served as great guard dogs.

  2. Later on, the dalmatians became the motto of the fire department, because they were sometimes left at the fire station to guard the gear, and guard the station as well.

A long time ago (before the advent of trucks and cars) Water tanks were pulled to fires by horses. Dalmations are great for rounding up horses. They are still with certain departments today for the sake of tradition.

it's a myth that all fire departments have a dalmation. They can't do anything on a fire scene... they can't even go to a fire scene. They are just a station mascott

Why do firestations use dalmatian dogs?

Dalmatians were originally bred as carriage dogs. They would run under or beside carriages and guard the horses/carriage from theives, vermin and other dogs. When the first "Fire Wagons" developed they were used to guard the wagons and keep people away from the firemen and wagon. Dalmatians were originally chosen for this job for their temperment and distinguishable coat.(Their coat stands out of the crowd) Even though "firedogs" aren't usually out on the front field, firemen use them as mascotts because of their colourful past.
