Dalmatians were originally bred as carriage dogs. They would run under or beside carriages and guard the horses/carriage from theives, vermin and other dogs. When the first "Fire Wagons" developed they were used to guard the wagons and keep people away from the firemen and wagon.

Dalmatians were originally chosen for this job for their temperment and distinguishable coat.(Their coat stands out of the crowd) Even though "firedogs" aren't usually out on the front field, firemen use them as mascotts because of their colourful past.
