I was recently on the island and the one explanation i get from Cubans was that they are popular because is a easy-to-care breed, nothing about the story.
They have short and strong hair, are small and have good health (despite their cronic Heart diseases when they are old) The Daschund personality it's strong and they can care by theyselves. They are good hunters, so they can even feed themselves alone chasing another small animals like rats or lizards (yummy!)
