God Parents are given to children during baptism, so that the children will have someone to look after them in the event that their birth parents no longer can.
The practice originated back when the average life expectancy of an adult was about 30 to 40 years old, given this and the likelihood you your birth parents having little opportunity to earn enough money to keep you, God parents were brought in to raise baptized children in the event that something went wrong with their birth parents.
In modern times, God Parents are a dying breed, being replaced by the social services and foster care/adoption systems, at the expense of the next generations family support network.

Yes! In the United Methodist Church, Baptism is understood as an action of God imparting grace (freely given love) to the one Baptized. United Methodists understand that God gives God's love to everyone. We call that prevenient grace, which is grace that goes before our awareness of or response to God's love. God acts first. Therefore, God's love is freely given regardless of a child's parents' marital status. Baptism is also understood as taking place within the context of a community of faith where the community can commit to raising the Baptized child so that one day he/she will profess the faith for him/herself. As such, it is not appropriate practice for children to be baptized outside of the presence of the congregation. Some clergy might also say that a family must regularly attend church and be instructed in the meaning of Baptism before he/she is willing to Baptize a child. The stringency of clergy adhering to this last point is frequently lax.

A strong Catholic belief is to be baptized after you are born, but if you look into the bible, it shows us that baptism is a way of declaring your salvation to the lost world and also a sign of faith to God. It is not required for salvation and it doesnt really matter what age you are baptized at.

In baptism, the stole symbolizes the individual's new identity in Christ and their commitment to a life of service within the Christian community. It often represents the grace of God and the priestly role of the baptized, emphasizing their calling to live out their faith. The stole can also signify the joy and dignity of the newly baptized as they enter into the life of the Church.
