They are also used by commercial ships, instead of using celestial navigation. You don't need a clear sky and the position is continuously updated. Bad weather systems can be more effectively avoided and the course re-routed. This saves time, money and damage.
People find them useful in cars, to tell them exactly where to go. Commercial traffic saves time and money. Private users have more peace of mind that they will not get lost.
Vehicles involved in accidents, can get emergency services to them more accurately, either by the services getting there more reliably, or by the victims knowing where they are in the first place. Saving time and lives.

I was confused about this too, I'm not quite sure but I think they measure the movement with GPS, they move about a centimeter per year. But the some people say that the motion is different and that you use a Seismometer, the same thing used to measure earthquakes.
