They were "seminomadic." In the spring they planted crops including corn in fields near their mudlodge villages. In the summer they became nomadic hunters of bison. In the fall they returned to their villages to harvest their crops. In the winter, they again went bison hunting.

The northernmost of the four bands, the Skidi, were skilled astronomers. When certain star groupings appeared in the smokehole of their mudlodges, they knew is was time to plant; when another star grouping appeared in the smokehole of their mudlodges, they know it was time to go bison hunting.
