The origins of the Advent calendar come from German Lutherans who, at least as early as the beginning of the 19th century, would count down the 24 days of Advent physically.
The advent calendar got its name because the days leading up to Christmas, Christmas itself, and a few days after Christmas are called advent. Advent calendars are calendars that count down the days of advent, or the days before Christmas.

Advent is a big part of Christmas celebrations in Germany. Different types of Advent calendars are used in German homes in addition to traditional Advent calendars. Some are wreaths made of Fir branches with 24 decorated boxes or bags with small presents inside hanging from the wreath. Others are called 'Advent Kranz' and is a ring of fir branches that has four candles on it. One candle is lit at the beginning at each week of Advent. Christmas trees are important in Germany. The tree is traditionally brought into the house on Christmas Eve. Wooden frames cover with colored plastic sheets with electric candles inside are sometimes put in windows to make the house look pretty from the outside.
