Aftershocks are simply smaller earthquakes that occur in the same area as a recent large earthquake. They tend not to do as much damage as the main earthquake, but can further weaken buildings that were damaged by the mainshock.

After shocks are so dangerous because they can add even more damage to the large earthquake. They are also dangerous because many people many not be ready for the after shock and something could fall on them. They could get seriously hurt.

How long do earth quakes last?

Earthquakes are very short, almost never longer than 1 minute, usually around 30 seconds. Weaker aftershocks occur afterward, these are around 10 seconds. The aftershocks are also very short, usually shorter than the initial earthquake. But in that small amount of time, earthquakes can cause massive damage.

What is the difference between a 5.0 earthquake and a 6.0 earthquake?

The earthquake magnitude is a measure of the energy released during an earthquake. The scale is logarithmic, such that a magnitude of 6.0 releases about 32 times more energy than a magnitude 5.0 earthquake, and in turn more than 900 times more energy than a magnitude 4.0 earthquake.

Japan gets over 1000 earthquakes a year. So it is likely that there was more than that hit during that period of time, however if one did hit it would have probably been marked as an aftershock.

How do you keep people safe when earthquakes occur?

A strong earthquake may be followed by weaker, but still potentially dangerous earthquakes called aftershocks. Aftershocks may be potentially more dangerous than other earthquakes of the same intensity because some buildings may have been weakened during the main shock.
