The centre of Antarctica has had snow falling on it for about 100,000 years. This snow doesn't melt but becomes ice with the weight of more snow on top. This is 7 million cubic miles (30 million cubic km) of ice.
This huge weight of ice forces the ice outwards radially all round the coast in the form of ice shelves that float out on the surface of the ocean. Some of these shelves rest on the sea bed. The ocean is warming and the warmer water melts the ice underneath the shelves, so the shelves become thinner and break off to form icebergs.
Melting of Antarctica's ice shelves occurs underwater, based on warming ocean water. which melts the shelves from underneath. This phenomenon occurs all year and is not limited to summer.
The ice shelves attached to Antarctica have begun to disintegrate -- melt, because of warming ocean waters. The Ross and Ronne have not been as severely affected as have the Larson ice shelves east of the Trans Antarctic mountains. Any melting of ice shelves will contribute to rising ocean levels all over the planet, which can displace people living at or near sea level. You can learn more about their concerns with a visit to antarcticglaciers.org.
Antarctica is a continent, and the size of raw land is not affected by global warming. Sea ice, which is permanent in the Arctic and covers 98% of the continent of Antarctica is affected by global warming. Some current predictions state that the Arctic sea ice may disappear in the coming years. (The Arctic Circle is a line of latitude the position of which moves slightly depending on the tilt of the earth. Global warming does not affect its position.)
All the "scientific" idiots think it's "global warming" and "holes in the ozone layer". It's all a bunch of hooey! I'm a Christian, and I trust that our Heavenly Father would keep his Creation safe.
Global warming is melting all of the ice which will make all of the animals that live there die and sea levels will rise.
people could go and rescue a few animals
The part of Antarctica that lies below the equator is mostly made up of ice shelves and glaciers. This region experiences colder temperatures and receives less sunlight than the part of Antarctica above the equator. It is also home to various species of wildlife that have adapted to the harsh environment.
Because that is where all the ice is, so look there first to see melting trends.
Apparently, the ice sheet is showing signs of more melting, and this is probably caused by increasing temperatures all over the globe.
Jasmine puts 18 hats away she puts a eq number of hats on 3 shelves
the blow torch will blow all the flakes away
A glacier is melting slowly away as it shrinks. Some may appear to be moving backwards, but they are actually melting from all sides at once.
