The phrase "All men are created equal" was first used by Thomas Jefferson during the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Franklin stylized the final form of the phrase.

The founding fathers wanted to protect, above all things, the unalienable rights which all men possessed: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
It mean't those of the white race. The founders of the declaration wanted to keep blacks out of it. The declaration led to many controversy as to whether black folk would be categorized under "all men".
