on land, you have to support yourself. if you had no spine, you would pretty much a blob. underwater is the closest thing you'll get to weightlessness. with barely any gravity, you don't have to work as much to support yourself.

What is there more of invertebrates or vertebrates on earth?

Definetely the sea, Even if you took all the Insects (largest group of land dwelling invertebrates by far) and the plants, It would pale in comparison to the amount of flora and invertebrate fauna in the oceans. The Ocean is where Life began and it has more species diversity, quantity, and mass than double the invertebrates on the Earth's land.

Do Chinese fire bellied newts eat on land or in the water?

Chinese fire bellied newts (of the species Cyanops orientalis) and other similar species which spend most of their time under water will usually feed underwater on insects and other small invertebrates. In the pet trade these species are often fed within the water on live or frozen invertebrates. The species would feed on land but since it spends the greater part of its day in the water then it will be unlikely to eat a lot on land.
