They're not. The first animals on land, and the only ones for a very long time, were arthropods and the world did just fine. Arthropods form the bottom of almost all food chains and feed all sorts of other life, they reach new land first and fertilise it with their bodies, they pollinate plants including 2/3 of our crops, and they fuel our innovations with their unique and wildly varying anatomy.

Sure, some are harmful to us, but mosquitos are eaten by Spiders, aphids are parasitized by some wasp species, and so on. Arthropods themselves take care of the pesky species! And only about 0,5% of arthropods are harmful to us; you won't ever see the greater part of them in your life, let alone be bothered by them.
