An element can be found in nature in atomic and molecular states. For example, Oxygen is most often found in nature in its molecular state - O2. (its atomic state would be O-) Note: Oxygen can be found in many other states such as O3, ozone.

Helium, by contrast, is found in its atomic state in nature - He. It does not need to be bound to another molecule.
